I have just returned home from an amazing trip to Vanuatu in the South Pacific. Whilst many would know the Islands of Vanuatu were recently devastated by Cyclone Pam just 3 months ago, many would not realise that God is still continueing and causing his Spirit to move in that land.
I travelled to Vanuatu with Ps Graham Baker, Missions Director for the Foursquare Church Australia, Ps Phil Baker an evangelist from Texas & Ps Bruce Knowlin a good friend of mine who was associate pastor at the church we planted in Blaxland.
The presence of God was so tangible in the meetings as we worshipped and lifted the name of Jesus over the land. Whilst most of the team headed home on Friday, Bruce and I stayed for the weekend to continue with meetings and especially on Sunday morning the presence of the Holy Spirit was amazing. People were weeping during the worship and continued through to the altar call at the end.
At the meeting on Thursday evening, Phil Baker made a call for people to re-dedicate their lives to Jesus and at least half the church responded. Many people received prayer for back pain and joint pain and testified they were healed during prayer. One lady I spoke with said all pain in her stomach left as soon as she received prayer.
God is wonderful and when He shows His wonder in this way is really encouraging. During the other days I was blessed to travel to the Island of Tanna where we taught around 20 pastors from the Island. In addition I was able to travel to a number of villages to examine damaged wrought by Cyclone Pam and assess what is the best way to help those most devastated by the Cyclone.
I was truly blessed to see what God is doing and felt encouraged to know that He is at work even when often can't see it in our own cities. Just as the latter part of Jobs life was greater than the former, so shall it be with us!
God Bless
James Kenny is my name, I was saved and was a pastor at Penrith Christian Fellowship Centre now known as Imaginations Church. I had the privilege to work with the late Pastor Gordon Gibbs, Steve Kelly and other great godly men and woman who impacted my life tremendously. For the past 30 years I have engaged in church planting, started a couple of not for profit organisations including Youth Hotline and Penrith Bible College. I currently serve at Sanctuary Church Blue Mountains.

Baptism in the Holy Spirit - Acts 1:4-5
Baptism in the Holy Spirit
The word
Baptize come from the Greek “baptizo” and means to be immersed. This word is
distinct in its meaning and is found some 80 odd times in scripture. Whilst
being baptized generally was a sign of conversion it is obvious the bible is
distinctly trying to emphasize a different work over and above that of
conversion.
In Acts 19:2
Paul specifically asks new converts whether they have received the baptism of
the Holy Spirit, something that was obviously not automatically meant to be a
part of conversion. It is therefore also important, even necessary, that we in
our generation seek out this exciting gift from God.
Wait for that which was promised
Whilst last
week we examined how the Spirit of God has always been at work throughout the
ages, I deliberately said little about His work in the New Testament. It is
here that I wish to begin our study in the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus, after
commissioning the disciples before his return to the Father, gives them what I
believe is one of the most important commands ever given. In Acts 1:4-8 Jesus tells
them to “wait” and that at Pentecost they would “receive” that which was
promised. Whilst we know the promise was for the Holy Spirit, I believe the
emphasis here is on the waiting.
Why was it
so important to “wait” for the promise of the Holy Spirit? Had not the
disciples spent much time with Jesus and heard truly amazing truths and seen
miracles again and again?
I believe
the answer to this question lies in the result of the waiting. Acts 2 gives us
the account of this dramatic event as it unfolds. There are a number of things
which are evident of the Spirit’s encounter on Pentecost.
Believers are transformed (Evidence)
Believers speak with new and strange
languages (Signs)
Believers are compelled to talk about
what they have received (Go)
Spend some
time discussing these statements above and share your own encounters…
Waiting is
something that not everyone is good at, in fact if we are to examine scripture
we can find numerous examples of man’s inability to wait for God. None more
famous than that of Abraham and his impatience & the birth of Ishmael. See
Gen 7, are there other examples?
Isaiah 40:31
says “they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount
up on wings of Eagles, they shall run and not grow weary, they shall walk and
not grow faint”. Un-doubtable one of the most powerful and demonstrative examples
of the power of waiting and running with what God has for us is seen in this
scripture.
Again Zec
4:6 tells us that it is “not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit says the
Lord…” Being able to let go and let God is not one of our strong points. As
followers of Jesus, we must learn to do as Jesus did, that is only to go where
the Father points and only to do what the Father commands.
Waiting Precedes the Going
As a result
of being filled with this new power, “dunamis” power as the scripture says, the
bible tells us that they firstly took the gospel of Jesus to Jerusalem. This
was prophesied by Jesus himself in Acts 1:8 “…first in Jerusalem…” Emphasis
here though was not on the power itself, but merely a catalyst to do the
commandments of Jesus “to go into all the world”. Why is this important?
In fact as
we examine scripture in Acts 6 beginning with the stoning of Stephan, the
disciples or believers were “thrust out” of Jerusalem, out of their homes and
comfortable lifestyles into unknown territory. It is so easy to get stuck at
the “altar…” and to forget that there is a whole relationship that needs to be
developed.
As a result the
church expanded westward and in less than a few hundred years would become the
religion of the Roman Empire and ultimately the then known world.
Witnesses
Jesus tells
the disciples they are to be His witnesses, that is, eye witnesses to what
Jesus has done at the cross, his resurrection & his ascension into heaven.
But the power of His message is in redemption and power of His blood through
the forgiveness of sins. But Jesus uses a very powerful word which ultimately
prepares the disciples for greater things. The word for witness used here is “martyr”
from the Greek indicating the way in which many believers would die taking this
message to the world. Thus indicating the road ahead to be a difficult one for
many of them. It is this work the Holy Spirit most certainly enables the
disciples to take when He clothes them with power. See Acts 1:8
Clothed from on high
Luke 24:49
says "And behold, I am sending forth the promise
of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed
with power from on high." See also John 14:15-20. The interesting aspect
of this scripture is that Jesus describes the empowering here as a “clothing”.
See Judges 6:34; 1Chron 12:18; 2Chron
24:20
In all the examples above, scripture shows
us that the clothing or upon of the Holy Spirit was for the empowering for God’s
people to do His work.
Jesus makes the comment in John 14 “these
things and many more you shall do” indicating that we should expect to be used
in much the same ways that Jesus was used by the Father to outwork His plan.
Again and again in scripture we see Jesus asking for strength to do these
things. How much more should we do the same?
In
Conclusion
The Holy Spirit baptism is without any
doubt an empowering for the outworking of God’s plan. Without it, the church
and body of Christ universally simply become just another organization or “toothless
tiger” without any real power to be all He has called us to be.

The Holy Spirit throughout the Ages - SOS Wk 4
The Holy Spirit throughout the Ages
When we
think of the Holy Spirit, we mostly think of Him in our own context, that is
how we associate and relate to Him. Yet as we examine scripture, we soon see
that the Holy Spirit both as a subject and person of the Godhead is far more
reaching and awesome than we could ever imagine.
In fact,
when we look back in time, we will find the Holy Spirit present and active
throughout the ages impacting and working with every generation. And whilst
time does not allow us to look at all events, the purpose of this study is to
highlight some of those events. Our objective is to see that the Holy Spirit
has indeed always been outworking that which the Father has spoken.
The Holy Spirit in Creation
Even in the
beginning we see the work of the Holy Spirit in creation. It is no accident the
Spirit of God is mention not only in the first book of the bible, Genesis, but
in the very first couple of verses.
Read Gen 1:2; 2:7
The same
word used here for Spirit and breath is the same word used for the Holy Spirit
throughout scripture. Job 12:10 says “In his hand is the life
of every creature and the breath of all mankind.” And Psalms 104:30 says “When you
send your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground”. In Psalm 139:7-8 says “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I
flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are
there; if I
make my bed in the depths, you are there.”
In addition it was the Holy Spirit which was brooding (hovering) over creation
from the Hebrew word “rachaph”. This word speaks of a mother hen who broads
over her hatchlings in anticipation. Isaiah 34:16 & 40:7 says the Spirit
brings order and controls nature.
The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament
As we look at the work of the Spirit in the Old Testament it is easy to
determine that Spirit followed some sort of order or pattern when dealing with
man. Time and time again we see the Spirit working mainly with certain groups
of people.
Kings; Priests & Prophets
The work of the Spirit has always been for one main purpose, the
outworking of the plans and promises of the Father. When we look at the Spirit
in the Old Testament we see this pattern obvious and the way in which the
Spirit worked with people groups was also obvious.
Kings – Saul (1Sam 10:1); David (1Sam 16:13); Solomon (1Kings 1:38-50)
etc.
Priests – Melchizedek the King of Righteousness (Gen 14:18; Heb 7:1-2);
Aaron (Lev 8:12)
Prophets – Isaiah (1:1 & 2:1); Jeremiah (1:2-10); Ezekiel (11: 5) etc
Naturally,
there were many occasions when this pattern was not used but generally speaking
it was the norm.
Jesus – King, Priest & Prophet
Jesus whom
Hebrews (chapter 6:30) declares as both King, Priest & Prophet makes it
possible for all who have be “born again” of him to take this same function
within the Household of our God.
Just as
Jesus came to fulfil his roles as king, priest and prophet, we the offspring
of Christ (See Rom 8:29) are also called to fulfil these same functions.
The Promise of the Holy Spirit on all
Flesh
Joel the
minor prophet spoke a promise of a new time and pattern of the Holy
Spirit. Not only does Joel indicate that
the Spirit will now come upon “all who call on His name” but promised to come
to each and every generation that followed. See Joel 2
Acts 2 – The Outpouring as Promised
The book of
Acts begin with a commandment by Jesus “To Wait for that which was promised”
and most of us know the result of this initial outpouring and fulfilment as prophesied
by Joel in chapter two. Once again, it is the Spirit which is initiating
something new in the name of the Father and it is the Spirit that has always
done this.
Every
generation has had its Pentecost and every great revival in time has been
initiated by God’s Spirit. Whether it be Azusa Street in our time and the
second & first great awakening of the 1700’s to the work of the Spirit
through the early disciples, God’s Spirit has always been there to outwork the
plan and purposes of the Father in creation.
And the next
great outpouring will be initiated by the Spirit…Are you ready???

The Fall & It's Consequences - Genesis 3
Was reading Genesis this morning, starting reading the Swedish version to give a different perspective. Naturally came to chapter three and the fall account which speaks of Adam & Eve's sin. As all males we know that Adam naturally blames Eve for their sin and Eve in turn blames the serpent. Once again a classical example of how man avoids shame through the blame game.
What is interesting about this scripture is the consequences that each part receives for their sin. The serpent is firstly told that he will crawl on his belly and eat dust and be scorned for the rest of his days. In addition it is prophesied that woman's offspring will eventually crush the head of the serpent speaking of Jesus and the victory He won on Calvary. Whilst this may sound fair enough, it is what is not spoken about the serpent which springs to mind.
The serpent either had other forms of transport rather than crawling on his belly, whether it be wings, legs or some strange design that we have not seen and it was not God's intention that he be an object of scorn. This point I find particularly interesting when it comes to the workings of Satan amongst those who are held captive by him. People who are in bondage of sin are often as result objects of scorn by society and those around them. Assuming of cause they are found in their sin which many are not and in today's society we make many excuses for sin and allow some whilst disallowing others. In addition we have a habit of grading sin, white lies are of no consequence whilst murder deserves death in some countries. Yet the Father calls all sin equal, irrespective of how we view it. Naturally the Lord has called all men to live and walk in righteousness before Him and the only way for any of us to do this is to be covered by God's grace and love which comes via the shed blood of Jesus.
The Man is told that he shall produce fruit by the sweat of his brow. Put simply man was never meant to produce through toil or difficulty. The earth neither was meant to produce thistles and thorns nor any of those things which we know are a farmers nightmare. Rather man was to simply live off the provision of the Father's garden and all it produced. This to me speaks of what I call a "Holy Ease" that is not striving and struggling for what the Lord has promised to us. As sons of God we know that we have access to all that the Father owns and according to scripture he owns "the cattle on a thousand hills" speaking of his limitless supply. Zec 4:6 is a scripture we all know so well and naturally gives us an understanding of how the Father can bring the fruit and results that we all want and desire in our lives.
The Woman, was told that she would give birth in pain, no longer would she be pain free whilst bringing forth the fruit of their relationship but would understand, I believe, the same pain the Father has in bringing forth his own children. Anyone who has started or pioneered any work will understand the time and effort it takes to see these things birthed. Not by any means do I say I understand what it is to give birth in the naturally but certainly understand in the spiritual. However, it was never God's intention that woman would have this experience but must have been in some way a painless experience. It is however through the pangs of birth that we truly understand the joy of creation and all mothers will tell you the pain quickly is forgotten when they hold their child for the first time and feel it's breath on their face.
Both Man and Woman where then exiled from the garden so that they would not have access to eternal life. Scripture goes on to speak of how the Father provided them with skin covering, some believe the first blood offering for sin ever exampled in the word of God, giving us an example and pattern which would be followed throughout time. This then shows us that God's intention was that we would have normal access to eternal life nor would we ever need from the beginning to bring a blood sacrifice for our sin. And though we can easily say how we have fallen, the Father knew the outcomes before they happened and made a way possible back to this original plan by sending His son Jesus to us. And scripture tells us that "He would that none should perish, but all would have eternal life" as John 3:16 explains.
Though there are consequences of sin, Jesus is the answer to all!

School of the Spirit - Week Three
After an interesting week, the least I can say is things are heating up. During the week, I felt the Holy Spirit say that we needed to go deeper into the river, as written in Ezekiel 47. In addition, Ann-Marie later in the week felt there was going to be an attack. I believe this was in direct response to the Holy Spirit wanting us to go deeper. After communion and prayer we took time to wait on the Lord for Therese, one of the ladies in attendance, and bring what I believe was great wisdom and knowledge from the Holy Spirit, remembering that 1John 2:20-23 says we can know all things by the Holy Spirit. He who knows all things is also able to reveal things to us to bring us all into this deeper relationship with Him.
Throughout the week I kept getting revelation of John 3 where Nicodemus comes to Jesus. As you know, Jesus speaks to Nicodemus that we must “be born again.…born again of water and Spirit”. Whilst many scholars are in disagreement about this meaning, I feel the meaning is rather simple. God wants us to be born again by His Spirit, this speaks both of the regenerative and baptism of God's Spirit but also by the water of God's word. First we make this decision to follow Christ to the cross by the revelation of His word and then we have an ongoing relationship through the Spirit.
Scripture tells us the Spirit is life, as apposed to the letter which is death. Being born again is not just about a decision we make at conversion but how we interact with God's Spirit on a daily or even momentary basis.
Needless to say, the third week of our school was an interesting one. John Rees started us off by looking at scripture relating to the Trinity and God the Holy Spirit. He also shared with us about something I know very little, that is journaling in the Spirit. Put simply, you wait on the Holy Spirit to speak to you, either about yourself or a particular need you know someone else may have and you write down what He reveals. Journaling is in a way what I do in these blogs, as the Holy Spirit downloads something new, I simply write about it. We spoke how these things should be anchored or based in the word and therefore tested in this way. The Holy Spirit will always point to the Father and the Son, meaning that anything He says will align with God's word and scripture.
This coming week, we are looking at scripture relating to the Holy Spirit's work throughout time. Whilst I do have the notes for this subject they are in Swedish and will need to be written in English before posting them.
Have a blessed week!

Friends of God - James 2:23
It is so easy to be caught up in the wonderful worship and praise that is everywhere on YouTube and the like. Likewise, the great teaching and preaching that is available is truly amazing and one has to admit, despite the huge amount of rubbish that is published, there is also a great deal of fantastic material on the web today compared to what we had prior the net. Yet it can also be a distraction to what the Lord really wants of us.
James 2:23 calls us "friends of God" indicating a type of relationship the Lord truly desires with us. When I think of a friend, I think of someone who spends quality time with me and who is interested in me. God is definitely interested in us, He has proven this by going to the cross for our sins, but are we wanting to be friends with Him? In addition Paul in 2Cor 11:2 indicates that we are indeed called the Bride of Christ and are to be presented to the Bridegroom as pure. This gives us a glimpse of the depth of intimacy we have with our coming Bridegroom.
Over and over again we are called to be a Holy Priesthood in scripture, that is those who are both before God and the People, see Joel's example of the porch and the altar. And so anything that takes away from this time of intimacy and service before the Lord can in effect become a distraction or even an idol.
When we visit churches today, the overwhelming response or thing we notice the most is just how few people are involved in the services. That is, the services are generally designed to accommodate an audience or a crowd rather than being a place where the whole body together is actively engaged in the service and playing or contributing their part. This I believe is the greatest travesty in the Church of the 21st Century. We have lost our opportunity to engage and even if we are to say that the service is not necessarily the place for this, the question I would ask is why not? Why have we made service for those who are "professionals" or those employed?
As I see it, we who are the body of Christ are called to an intimate relationship with our Lord and play an active role in outworking God's plan on the earth whether it be when we are together or in our homes. We must comeback to the place we once knew, of depth and overwhelming love with our Lord and remove those obstacles which hinder this.
Let me close by saying whether it be in our services or on the net there is lot's of great stuff to consume, but it is our personal one on one time that the Lord truly wants from each of us. Let's Remember that!

Prophecy Concerning Australia's Alliances
Whilst in prayer today I felt the Holy Spirit begin to speak to me regarding Australia's alliances with certain nations.
"According to the covenants you have made with those around you says the Spirit of the Most High, it shall be dealt to you, for my calling to you as a Nation and all those to whom have laid the foundations of this nation, is to be an example of my compassion and reconciliation to all the peoples of the earth. For just as you were once overthrown by your mother, England, I rescued you from your shame and restored to you all my promises. But you have aligned yourself with evil and allowed pride to rise in your heart. All however is not lost and as you humble yourself before me and break off those covenants you have made with those who would do detestable things, I will once again cause you to shine to all those around you and make you a blessing to my name. I will see all those things once said come to pass and great multitudes will come to you to marvel and see my hand at work in you."
I believe Australia has reached a turning point and the recent trip by our foreign minister to Iran marks this turning point. Iran is a nation who has declared to destroy Israel as a nation and as a nation we must stand against this alliance. In addition, Australia has also changed the way in which it engages the enemies of it's partners. Choosing to directly engage in battle, and though I have seen much good come from previous Liberal governments, I feel these recent changes are detrimental to how our heavenly Father will deal with us as a nation.
Again in prayer today the 6th of May I sensed God's Spirit lead me again to this prophecy regarding Australia's alliances, this time bringing a message to other nations who have in recent times made covenant with the enemies of Israel. I sense the word above extends to nations which have a strong Christian heritage such as the United states and Sweden and who in recent years have changed their policies regarding Israel. And whilst many will say Israel has in many years turned it's back on the Lord, the Lord has never abandoned Israel and continues to be the Apple of His Eye!
"For my heart longs for my people Israel says the Most High, to see them realise my love and grace towards them and the measures I have taken to bring them into covenant relationship with Me. For my hand has been against your enemies and blessing upon those who have blessed you and this will continue says the Spirit of the Most High. For I will bring down those nations who appose you and humble those who make alliances with them your enemies. Therefore, I would have my people around the world to stand in agreement as one voice and prayer to appose those who rise against my people Israel and raise my banner of love over them."
This is therefore a call to prayer, to pray that the alliances that Australia has made, which dishonour our heavenly Father, be broken and that our support for Israel continues.
In Christ Jesus,
James
